Moldstoppers offers closed (or sealed) crawl space services to homeowners and businesses in Greenville, Spartanburg, and the Greater Wilmington and surrounding areas.
What is an encapsulated crawl space? It is closing the crawl space from outside humid air and sealing the house structure from the ground’s humid vapors so the crawl space becomes a much cleaner, less humid environment which doesn’t support the growth of mold.
For years residential construction promoted vented crawl spaces. This allows the moist humid air during the summer months to infiltrate the crawl space where it contacts a much cooler air (result of air conditioned houses and HVAC systems in the crawl) which promotes condensation. With humidity levels over 55% the growth of mold is promoted.
By encapsulating the crawl space the outside air is blocked out. The crawl space is sealed with vinyl sheeting which covers the ground and the walls of the interior of the foundation. A commercial grade dehumidifier is then installed to control the humidity levels of the sealed crawl and the dehumidifier is plumbed to the exterior of the structure eliminating water and excess humidity in the crawl. It is the smart way to prevent the growth of mold especially in the southeast which historically has high humidity levels.
Increase in Closed Crawl Spaces
Why have top general contractors increased their practice of closing crawl spaces?
- They prevent hot humid air from entering the crawl space and promoting condensation and mold growth.
- They provide a much better air quality in the home since some have estimated that up to 30% of the air that enters the house comes from the crawl space.
- Energy companies have estimated that encapsulated/closed crawl spaces can provide up to 18% energy savings for the home owner.
