There are plenty of contractors in the Carolinas that think spraying bleach is the cure all solution for mold remediation. Take a look at this $500,000.00 home where the contractor sprayed bleach on the fungal infested flooring lumber.
You can notice where the root of the mold is still present.
The fact of the matter is bleach is only effective on non-porous materials like glass, ceramic, laminate countertops, etc. It is not good for remediating wood, drywall, grout, or other porous materials. The active ingredient in bleach is only working when you smell the strong smell (which is a very brief time). Once the strong odor is gone so is the effectiveness of bleach.
Here is where the real problem arises. Take a look at a bottle of bleach next time you are in the supermarket. What % of the bottle is the active ingredient? It generally is around 3%. Guess what the other 97% of the contents are? That’s right. . . WATER. . . the main source of food for mold growth. Bleach kills the blossom (and color) of the surface mold but then FEEDS the hypha or root of the mold and it will come back with a vengeance.
Solution?? Use a good anti fungicide which kills both the blossom and the root. It is also wise to use a top notch preventative on the wood to deter growth in the future.
